Its location, on a tufa spur 443 meters above sea level, offers breathtaking views of the Tiber Valley and the famous “badlands.”

Origins and History

The origins of Civita di Bagnoregio date back to the Villanovan era (9th-8th centuries B.C.), as shown by various archaeological finds. The area has seen the settlement of various civilizations over the centuries, but its geological history is what makes it famous. The land on which Civita stands is extremely fragile and unstable, prone to landslides and mudslides caused by earthquakes and rains. This geological instability has earned it the nickname “Dying City.” However, in recent years, Civita has seen a renewed interest in tourism, with a growing influx of visitors, leading to the rebirth of artisan workshops, the enhancement of local traditions and the development of accommodation facilities.

Main Attractions

The Old Town, Piazza San Donato and the Cathedral: Entering Civita through the scenic Porta Santa Maria, one is greeted by a small square surrounded by stately mansions and modest cottages. Continuing on, we come to the picturesque Piazza San Donato, where the Cathedral of San Donato stands out, dating from the 8th century but with a 16th-century appearance. Inside, a valuable 15th-century wooden crucifix is preserved, related to the Procession of the Dead Christ.

Alemanni Palace and Geological Museum of Landslides: On the same square is the Alemanni Palace, a Renaissance building from 1585. Inside it houses the Geological and Landslide Museum, which documents the geological history of Civita and the Valley of the Badlands. The museum provides an overview of the marine fossil record and the geological and landscape history of the area.

Bishop’s Palace, Valley of the Gullies and St. Bonaventure’s Cave: Other places of interest include the Bishop’s Palace, a 16th-century mill, and St. Bonaventure’s House. Walking through the narrow streets of the village, one can admire small arches, courtyards, small squares, and medieval and Renaissance houses. The Grotto of St. Bonaventure, located near the parking lot, is an ancient Etruscan tomb linked to the legend of St. Bonaventure, who is said to have been cured of a fatal illness there by St. Francis.

Other Must-See Places: Civita also offers the Chapel of the Madonna del Carcere, an ancient natural cave used as a tomb by the Etruscans, and the Poet’s Garden, a picturesque place with statues, wells, arbors, flowers and plants, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills.

Conclusion

Civita di Bagnoregio is a place where time seems to stand still.
