Unlike many other places in Italy, Acquapendente has neither Etruscan nor Roman origins. Its history begins in 964 with the construction of a castle by Otto I, which later came under the rule of the Swabians. Legend has it that the emperor&#8217;s mother, Matilda, favored the construction of a shrine, the same size as the Holy Sepulcher, on which the cathedral was later built. Later, Matilda of Canossa donated the city to the Papal States.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>The Cathedral of the Holy Sepulcher<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artistic-archaeological heritage of Acquapendente is rich and varied. Prominent among the main sights is the Cathedral of the Holy Sepulcher, so called because it houses a blood-stained stone believed to have come from the Jerusalem Sepulcher. This church, dating from between the 10th and 11th centuries, has a late Baroque facade and two bell towers on its sides. Inside, there are three apses, a beautiful wooden choir, some bas-reliefs and the crypt of the Holy Sepulcher.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>The towers of Acquapendente<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next to the cathedral stands the Torre Julia de Jacopo, a remnant of the fortress built by Arrigo IV. On the hill behind the cathedral, however, is the Clock Tower, also known as the Barbarossa Tower. Nearby, you can also visit the church of Augustine, attached to a 13th-century convent.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>The churches of St. Francis and St. Stephen<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Church of St. Francis is another religious building of great importance. Inside, a valuable wooden crucifix from the 14th century and some frescoes from the 17th century can be admired. The church of St. Stephen, on the other hand, preserves a fresco of the Sienese school depicting the Madonna Enthroned.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Historic buildings of Acquapendente<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The village also boasts some architecturally significant historic buildings, such as the Palazzo Visconti and the Palazzo Comunale, with its neoclassical-style portico.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Festivals and traditional festivals in Acquapendente<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acquapendente is also a place of traditions. One of the best-known festivals is the &#8220;Pugnaloni,&#8221; a popular festival that attracts many tourists every year. During this festival, special paintings are made on panels that are then carried in procession through the streets of the village, offering a unique and unforgettable spectacle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conclusion, Acquapendente is a village rich in history, art and traditions.
