The shrine is linked to Fraxinus excelsior, a tree revered by the ancient Norse that was burned in the Maremma countryside to ward off evil spirits.<\/p>\n<p>The Ash Shrine houses many beautiful paintings and relics, not to mention the fact that it is surrounded by picturesque scenery, perfect for an afternoon stroll&#8211;but that is not what attracts visitors to this church.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6023 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/maremma.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/foto-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"307\"><\/p>\n<p>Every year, pilgrims come to the Ash Tree Shrine to catch a glimpse of a statue of the Virgin Mary called The Virgin and Child (pictured below).<\/p>\n<p>Legend has it that the statue was found one day by a farmer who followed his ox into the woods. The farmer found his ox kneeling in front of an ash tree where the monks had hidden the statue of Our Lady.
