They were then embraced by a large brick wall, which stretched for more than 3 km.

Today Roselle, as it is known in English, is a giant archaeological park open to visitors for much of the year.

Although many of the spectacular buildings are little more than ruins, in some places covered by overgrown brambles, the archaeological park still offers a rare glimpse of how the Etruscans lived.

Through the City Gates, within the city walls, there are numerous public and private buildings as well as demarcated land for raising livestock.

All the ruins are accompanied by panels explaining elements of Etruscan daily life as well as the activities carried out in the various buildings.

In 294 BC the Roman Empire conquered Roselle, despite a valiant Etruscan attempt to repel them.

The Romans transformed the city into one of the largest colonies of the Augustan era, building public baths, cisterns and roads, many of which still exist.

Today Roselle is an incredible relic of the ancient Etruscans and Romans.

If you plan to explore Roselle, and you should because it is spectacular, bring light suitcases, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do a lot of walking.

There is so much to see in this ancient city that you could lose a whole day and still not have reached the end.
