Today a somewhat dilapidated fort, it stands guard over one of the cliffs overlooking Roccalbegna and has certainly seen better times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf7e6cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cf7e6cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">In the early 1400s the Cassero was deemed no longer important by the then ruler of Siena and was abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1400s the Cassero was deemed no longer important by the then ruler of Siena and was abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of letting it go to ruin, it was restored for residential use by Domenico d&#8217;Andrea and Gerardo Mariano in 1446 and was privately owned. The fort remained part of the grand ducal fief until the 19th century when it was entrusted to the village vicar. Today the Cassero is a striking pink stone building more reminiscent of a villa than a fortress. Inside, a small courtyard opens into a beautiful garden of lush green lawns and tall Mediterranean trees. During the 17th century, this garden also served as a casino for the rich and influential in the area.
