They were built in the 3rd century along with the rest of the city.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7969f4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7969f4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The original walls protected Cosa not only from invasions by land, but also from raids by sea. The perimeter extended for nearly a mile and was reinforced by 18 towers for sighting, defensive and offensive action.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e7da41 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3e7da41\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">One thousand years after the site was abandoned, the Aldobrandeschi arrived, who, according to local accounts, found an imposing city wall that required no modifications on their part.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a3cf29 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0a3cf29\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Of course, they still restored it in some places, but they could not finish it before the Sienese invaded.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c67262 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4c67262\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">After more than half a millennium, the walls were finally and meticulously finished at the end of the last century.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a37b63 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2a37b63\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The present walls are made of large sandstone blocks. Most are the original Roman laid ones. Along the walls three doors and what used to be a post office, the first example of its kind in Italian history.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ae3b37 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9ae3b37\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The 18 towers are still standing, although in various stages of decay. Those that faced the sea were rectangular, while the three that did not were circular.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6fdba35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6fdba35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The design of these walls was so clever that the Romans even had their own separate acropolis. It was situated to the south on a hill and surrounded by its own independent walls, with a single gateway from the interior.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d27744 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5d27744\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A sewage system was also making its way in and out of the walls.
