This lovely little church deserves to be mentioned because it is located in a beautiful corner of Massa Marittima.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

From the square where the Torre del Candeliere is located it is necessary to head in the direction of Via Albizzeschi. Walk under the Porta di San Rocco, which is actually connected to a very ancient and well-preserved 13th century wall. On the left is the Church of San Francesco.<\/p>\n

It’s a lovely walk and the church is, for some reason, within the grounds of a very elegant hotel, but its surroundings are lush and the adjacent monastery is venerable and ancient.<\/p>\n

Both the church and the monastery were founded by Saint Francis himself, so legend says, in 1220. He chose a Gothic style that reflected the austerity of all the religious buildings built in his name.<\/p>\n

The large and tall windows are unique in Massa Marittima. They imitate the religious style of the city of this period, which had the ability to let a lot of light into the buildings.<\/p>\n

Inside the church is sparsely decorated. The nave is unique, a stylistic element on which Saint Francis insisted because he believed that in this way the parishioners would be able to see the altar better.<\/p>\n

After years of degradation and an earthquake, the nave was entirely rebuilt. Only a part of the apse remains of the original church.<\/p>\n

Bare as it may seem, the walls are decorated with beautiful paintings. Valuable is the painting by Raffello Vanni depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with Saint Cerbonius and the three Saints from Massa Ambrogio, Bernardino and Giacomo.<\/p>\n

Once you exit the church, take a moment to admire the beautiful gardens around you and the panorama of Massa Marittima and the valley below, which you can only see from this side of the city!<\/p>\n
