Sadly much of their hard work was wasted, as the walls and its towers were abandoned as soon as the Sienese left Gavorrano. It was only in the second half of the last century that the city began restoration work on the city walls to bring it back to its ancient splendor. Some of the original 13th-14th century towers still remain.
