Instead it’s kind of a very large section of land that has been “sealed off” by construction or development.

Most of the towns of the Colline Metallifere are located within this area and each has its own entrance gate to the park.

The park keepers have recently created a list of different tourist itineraries to explore and appreciate the wonders of the area. Each itinerary explores a different section of the park and focuses on a different mineral or century.

For example, the Iron Itinerary starts from the Belagaio di Torniella and Gabellino ironworks (ancient medieval foundries). It then winds towards the ovens which in the 16th and 17th centuries were used to work iron. It finally ends on the Maremma coast, where the traces of an Etruscan plant for the production of iron and the ruins of a Roman villa are still visible.

Other itineraries may focus on the silver or medieval art and architecture that fall within the park, but all incorporate the beauty of the landscape, the wonder of open-pit mining and miners’ tools, and exhibitions or museums on local mining history and culture.

Unfortunately it is necessary to carry out these tours alone and you will need a car, but it is possible to obtain all the information and maps at the various tourist information offices in the towns that make up the Colline Metallifere.

If you just want to look at a small section of the park and still see mines, museums and beautiful countryside, then you should visit the main “gates” of the park: the Mining-Naturalistic Park of Gavorrano and the Archaeological-Mining Park of Montieri.

If you just want to look at a small section of the park and still see mines, museums and beautiful countryside, then you should visit the main “gates” of the park: the Mining-Naturalistic Park of Gavorrano and the Archaeological-Mining Park of Montieri.

For more information about the park, visit its website.

Grosseto Metalliferous Hills National Park This park was created to preserve the history of metallurgy and mining activities that took place in the Metalliferous Hills for more than three thousand years.
