The idea of creating an archaeological museum in Manciano dates back to 1960, when in the wake of some occasional discoveries in the municipal area, the Administration decided on the matter, asking the Archaeological Superintendence for permission to create an exhibition using some small collections held from private individuals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Initially it consisted of only a few showcases arranged in the atriums of the town hall, but starting from the end of the 1970s the idea developed of collecting in Manciano the testimonies of the most ancient phase of the history of this region, as part of a revision and rearrangement project of the museum system in the province of Grosseto
operated by the Superintendency itself.
The Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory of the Fiora River Valley was thus inaugurated in 1985, to illustrate the long history that preceded the appearance of the Etruscan culture in the southern part of the province of Grosseto.
The Museum is housed in a building built at the beginning of the 19th century (Palazzo Nardelli) at the highest point of the town, next to the Sienese fortress and the landscape that can be enjoyed from its windows is an integral part of the museum itinerary, giving identify many of the archaeological sites in the surrounding area whose materials are present in the exhibition.
The itinerary inside the museum is divided into six rooms that retrace the prehistoric ages from the Paleolithic, over 500,000 years ago, up to the beginning of the Iron Age (9th century BC), with the support of audiovisual and multimedia means.<\/p>\n

TO BE SEEN :<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the Paleolithic period, the stone tools from Montauto are of particular relevance, dating back to about 500,000 years ago, among the oldest traces of human presence in Tuscany. Of equal interest are the remains of the fauna: bones and teeth of elephant, hyena and rhinoceros, which show an environment profoundly different from today’s.
With the Neolithic, ceramics and agriculture were discovered, as well as new stone processing techniques. Among the pieces on display, it is worth mentioning some smooth stone axes, small flint arrowheads and some obsidian tools, which show the existence of contacts between these agricultural communities and Sicily and Sardinia, already in a particularly ancient moment.
The Eneolithic is one of the most important moments in the history of the Fiora valley. Various grave goods from the necropolises of this area (Le Calle, Corano, Poggio Formica, Poggialti) are exhibited in the Museum, consisting of small caves dug into the rock in which members of the same family were buried. The characteristic \u201cflask vases\u201d accompanied the burials, as well as flint arrowheads and, for the most important tombs, copper axes. Of particular interest is also a series of vases from the cave of Sassi Neri (Capalbio), where burials must have been accompanied by particular rituals.
The Bronze Age is mainly represented by numerous bronze objects, especially axes, from “storage rooms” (Montemerano, Sovana, Santa Fiora). These are probably deposits built along the streets of the time by itinerant metallurgists, who, after having supplied themselves with raw materials in the mines of the Colline Metallifere, went around the villages of the Fiora valley collecting unusable objects to remelt and selling new finished products.
The Final Bronze Age is a fundamental moment in the formation of Etruscan culture, in which important transformations take place both in the layout of the inhabited areas and in funerary customs. In the museum there are materials from incineration tombs found in the municipality of Manciano (Cavallini Del Bufalo and Bagnatoio), but also material from inhabited areas (Le Sparne di Poggio Buco and Sorgenti della Nova) which tell the story of daily life in those that are no longer more simple villages, but small well-structured settlements.
An entire room is dedicated to the town of Scarceta, the most important protohistoric archaeological site in the Manciano area. It is a settlement built on the banks of the Fiora, inhabited for a good part of the Bronze Age, in which numerous artisan activities were carried out, including the working of bronze and that of bone and horn, well represented in the finds exhibited in the Museum.<\/p>\n

The Museum is located in via Corsini 5, at the highest point of the town, next to the Rocca Senese, now the seat of the Municipality.<\/p>\n
