It was the Etruscans who founded the first settlements, although some traces date the first visits to this territory back to the Bronze Age. During the medieval period the Collesalvetti area was divided into seven Curtes, then elevated to the role of castles and grouped in the localities of Nugola, Castell’Anselmo, Parrana and Colognole. The Pisan domination of the area began in 1109, in this period the castles declined and the area was divided into 13 municipalities, Nugola, Poggio Sigeri, Cordecimo, Santo Apostolo, Vicarello, Collesalvetti, Cugnano, le Parrane, Colognole, Farneta and Postignano, all placed under the government of Porto Pisano. The first documents that name Collesalvetti as the capital date back to 1178, in a bull from Pope Alexander III, and later in 1272 in the sale of some land. In 1300 the Collesalvetti area faced a dark period characterized by a terrible epidemic of plague and by the wars between Pisa and Florence, in 1406 the Pisan domination ended and the Florentine one began, and Collesalvetti was placed under the control of the Vicariate of Lari. During the Medici era, Collesalvetti experienced a period of great growth, thanks above all to the reclamation works carried out by the Medici. In 1737 the Grand Duchy of Tuscany passed to Lorraine, who continued the important work of reclamation of the territory. Worth noting are the Medici Villa, the Medici Bridge, the Leopoldino Aqueduct, the Church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Oasi della Contessa Provincial Nature Reserve, the Monti Livornesi Provincial Park and the Protected Natural Areas of local interest in Parrana and Colognole.

Cecina, mentioned by Dante in the XIII canto of the Inferno,

” they have neither so harsh nor so thick bushes
those wild beasts that they hate
the cultured places between Cecina and Corneto”

it is one of the most important localities of the Etruscan Coast. Dating back to the Etruscan period, the city owes its name to that of one of the most powerful Etruscan families, that of the gens Ceicna (or Kaikna) of Volterra and known in Roman times with the name of Caecina. During the Roman domination, the consul Albino Cecina had a villa built, the ruins of which are still visible today in the locality of San Vincenzino. With the advent of the Romans, the city experienced a period of abandonment which culminated in 410 with the beginning of the incursions of the Goths. The Lombards elevated the city to the role of Curtis Regia, a direct possession of the royal crown; Cecina also maintained this role under the Medici and Lorraine families. Until 1406 Cecina was placed under the control of the Republic of Pisa, and from 1407 it became part of the Florentine power under the government of the Medici, remaining there until the 13th century. Starting from 1800 the Lorraines carried out important reclamation works, which improved the conditions of the territory, determining a profound development of the economy for this city. The city hosts historical monuments and buildings of great architectural and artistic importance, the Church of Saints Giuseppe and Leopoldo, the Church of the Holy Family, the Cippo di Rimazzano, the fountain of Maremma Thirsty, and the archaeological site of San Vincenzino, where the remains of a Roman villa from the 1st century BC

Rosignano Marittimo, probably already frequented since the Roman period, the name of the city derives from that of a proper name – Rasinius – or of a family – Rasinii -, other versions see this area as inhabited in the Etruscan era. However, the official name Rosignano Marittimo dates back only to 1862, when the specific “marittimo” i.e. from the Maremma (from the Latin Maritima) was added. During the Middle Ages Rosignano Marittima was a possession of the Della Gherardesca family, from the 10th century it was elevated to the role of municipality, on the death of the Countess Matilde di Canossa the Castle of Rosignano passed to the Pisan Church. The city then followed the fate of the territory passing first to the Medici and then to the Lorraine. Worthy of note are the Church of Saints John the Baptist and Hilary, the Oratory of the Madonna della Neve, the Oratory of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Hilary of Poitiers, the Solvay Theatre, the Villa Celestina, the Villa Mirabella.

Bibbona is a city of ancient origins, mentioned for the first time in an official document in 1040 when a castle owned by the powerful Farolfi family from Lucca is mentioned. The name derives from the Etruscan, with the personal name “Vipi” then transformed into the Latin “Vibius or Bibius”. The territory was disputed between the Della Gherardesca family and the Bishop of Lucca. In 1490 Bibbona was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, under the government of the Medici family. Most of the territories were marshy and only thanks to the reclamation started by the Medici and continued by the Lorraine was it possible to restore the territory. The historic center of Bibbona is one of the most beautiful in the Tuscan Maremma, with its characteristic stone-paved streets surrounding the ancient castle, particularly interesting are the Palazzo del Comune Vecchio, of medieval origin, the Gardini palace, the Fonte Bacco, the Rocca , dating back to 1200, the Parish Church of Sant’Ilario, the Church of San Giuseppe and the Church of Santa Maria della Pieta.

Montescudaio

The Montescudaio DOC production disciplinary includes the municipalities of the Val di Cecina in the production areas, with the exception of Volterra, therefore Casale Marittimo, Guardistallo and Montescudaio. In fact, some tombs containing axes, copper daggers and arrowheads date back to this period, now exhibited at the Guarnacci Museum in Volterra. The city is officially mentioned with the name of Guardistallo in a document dated 1144, the name probably derives from the German words “Warda” and “Stall”, literally “place of guard”. Subsequently the castle followed the fate of the other fiefdoms of the Della Gherardesca counts, placed under the government of the Republic of Pisa. Upon the fall of the Pisan power, Guardistallo passed under Florentine control, and in 1648 the Grand Duke Ferfinando II ceded Guardistallo and Casale Marittimo to the noble Ferdinando Ridolfi, under the marquisate of Montescudaio. In 1739 the Grand Duke of Tuscany, of the Habsburg-Lorraine family, gave Guardistallo to the Marquis Carlo Ginori, determining his official entry into the Marquisate of Riparbella. Particularly interesting are the Marchionneschi Theatre, dating back to 1882, the Castle and the Clock Tower, the House of the Camarlingo and the Church of Sant’Andrea.

Montescudaio is among one of the most beautiful places in the Val di Cecina, and is also included in the list of the “most beautiful villages in Italy”. Probably inhabited since Etruscan times, its origins are medieval and follow the fate of the other territories subjected to the government of the Della Gherardesca family. In 754 one of the members of the Della Gherardesa family, Wilfrid, who became a Benedictine monk, founded the Monastery of San Pietro in Palazzuolo in Monteverdi Marittimo and donated his properties to the monastery itself, including Castagneto. The Della Gherardesca family continued to dominate Castagneto Carducci throughout the Middle Ages. In the 12th century Castagneto and the castles of Biserno, Vignale, Campiglia and Bibbona were ceded by Henry VI of Swabia to the city of Pisa, and the Della Gherardesca lords officially became Captains of Justice of this territory. Between 1300 and 1334 Castagneto was at the center of some fights between members of the Della Gherardesca family. The city was sacked and damaged during the march of the army of the King of Naples, Alfonso of Aragon, and suffered important incursions by the troops of Charles VIII of France who wanted to take possession of the kingdom of Naples. In the fifteenth century Castagneto became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany obtaining a certain autonomy, while always remaining under the influence of the Della Gherardesca Counts, the Medici family of Florence was followed by that of the Lorraines, and in this period Castagneto lost its autonomy and returned strongly under the rule of the Della Gherardescas. Don’t miss the Church of the Propositura of San Lorenzo, the Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso, dating back to 1500, the Oratory of San Guido.

Marina di Castagneto Carducci, is a small fraction of Castagneto Carducci, and one of the most beautiful seaside destinations in Tuscany, awarded with the Blue Flag for its waters and the quality of the services offered. The hamlet of Marina di Castagneto Carducci was born in the 18th century, when a lookout fort was built, but the actual development only took place during 1900, when the infrastructure necessary for the creation of a seaside resort was built. Very interesting are the Lorenese Fort, the Villa Margherita, built in the first decades of the 20th century by the Della Gherardesca counts, the Villa Emilia and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

Bolgheri is certainly one of the most famous villages in Tuscany, made famous by the poem by Giosuè Carducci “Davanti San Guido”. The name of Bolgheri would derive from that of a military settlement of Bulgari, an ally of the Lombards. Bolgheri is mentioned in an official document for the first time on 23 January 1158, as the property of the Monastery of Santa Maria di Serena, built by Count Gherardo Della Gherardesca, the city was in fact always placed under the control of the Della Gherardesca counts. Starting from 1393 Bolgheri suffered numerous attacks and damages, first by the Florentines, and in 1496 by the Army of Emperor Maximilian, when the Florentines managed to subdue Pisa, Bolgheri definitively passed to the Republic of Florence. Among the most important monuments are the Medieval Castle, the Oratory of San Guido, the Church of Saints Giacomo and Cristoforo, the Church of San Sebastiano, the Church of Sant’Antonio. Also not to be missed is the Bolgheri Wildlife Refuge, created in the second half of the 1900s and the first private natural oasis in Italy, founded by the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, and recognized as a WWF Oasis since 1968.

Val di Cornia

Val di Cornia is one of the most important wine producing areas in Tuscany. The inhabited area was already frequented before the Middle Ages, in fact there were settlements already in Etruscan and Roman times, this area is in fact particularly rich in mineral deposits and today there is a large archaeological site, the archaeological-mining park of San Silvestro, which rises near the Church of the Madonna della Fucinaia. The city began to form in the Middle Ages, under the government of the Della Gherardesca family, under the power of Pisa. Noteworthy are the Palazzo Pretorio, dating back to the second half of the 13th century and home to the Historical Archives, the permanent Carlo Guarnieri exhibition and the Mineral Museum, the Rocca and the annexed museum, the San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park, the walls with the access gates, Porta Ribellino, Porta Pisana and Porta Fiorentina, the Museum of Sacred Art, the Church of the Madonna di Fucinaia, the Church of San Sebastiano, the Church of Sant’Antonio, the Oratorio della Misericordia, the Pieve di San Giovanni and the Propositura of San Lorenzo.

San Vincenzo is one of the best-known places on the Etruscan Coast, in the Livorno Maremma. It is an important tourist-seaside resort which obtained the first Blue Flag in 2006. The first frequentations date back to the Paleolithic, thanks above all to its strategic position between the Cornia and Cecina rivers and the Metalliferous Hills.
Already in the Etruscan era the territory of San Vincenzo was exploited for its mineral deposits and between the 9th and 5th centuries BC. it became the center of an important mining activity. The name of San Vincenzo was mentioned for the first time in 1285, when a watchtower was mentioned, the “Torre di San Vincenzo”, built by the Pisans and part of the coastal fortifications.
The Romans built the Via Aurelia right near the settlement. The Castle was built by the Longobards, during the period of the domination of the Della Gherardesca counts. When the powerful city of Pisa fell in 1406, the city passed to Florence and was placed under the Municipality of Campiglia Marittima. Pisa never surrendered to its destiny and between 1494 and 1509 numerous rebellions took place, the most important of which was that of 1505, known as the “Battle of San Vincenzo”. The Florentines prevailed and subsequently San Vincenzo was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.
Do not miss the Church of San Vincenzo Ferrer, the Tower of San Vincenzo, the Old Tower and the Rimigliano Coastal Park.

Populonia is a town in the province of Livorno, known above all for having been one of the most important Etruscan and Roman cities. Populonia overlooks the Gulf of Baratti, one of the most beautiful views of the Tuscan Maremma. Populonia was one of the most important cities of Etruria known as “Pupluna” and was the only city along the coast. It was part of the Etruscan Dodecapoli, i.e. of the twelve city states that made up Etruria, and was one of the most important centers for mining and metallurgical activity in the Etruscan era.
In Roman times, more precisely in 205 BC, it was Populonia that supplied Scipio Africanus with iron for his expedition to Africa, for the Second Punic War. Populonia always enjoyed a certain independence, maintaining even under the Roman Empire its own currency and a certain autonomy also in trade. Trade was predominantly maritime and based on iron and steel. During the wars between Marius and Silla, Populonia took the side of Marius, who was defeated. Scylla punished all those who had supported her opponent, also destroying the city of Populonia, thus starting its decline.
The decline of the city continued inexorably even in the 1st century BC, when the first barbarian invasions and looting also began. In 570 AD. it was again destroyed and conquered by the Longobards, another important looting, the last for the city, took place in 809 by the Saracen pirates, from this moment the city was definitively abandoned even by the last remaining inhabitants.
The modern city of Populonia still preserves important remains of the ancient city, such as the Etruscan walls and some important buildings from the Roman era, while the necropolises are found in the Archaeological Parks of Baratti and Populonia.

Suvereto, a beautiful town in the province of Livorno, in the heart of the Val di Cornia, is famous for its wineries, it is in fact the production area of the DOC Val di Cornia Suvereto.
