The first inhabitants of the area arrived at the end of the Bronze Age, but there are ruins in the surrounding countryside that are much older, old enough to suggest that Saturnia was the first real city in Italy.<br \/>Still, for a place that has seen at least 2,800 summers, Saturnia is hard to place. The nearby Maremmans insist that the city has sold its soul to the devil, and that is why it feels empty. But given that Saturnia attracts more tourists than all the other towns in the Fiora valley combined, it is likely that behind this belief there is just a bit of envy. Its Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance relics are incredible and are part of the current landscape, just like its excellent restaurants. Unfortunately, many tourists never see these relics and come to Saturnia mainly because it is one of the most popular spa destinations in Italy. Here it is possible to immerse yourself in the pools with a natural temperature of 37\u00b0C all year round. Don&#8217;t do what most do<br \/>part of the tourists. The best time to visit is lunchtime, when tranquility returns and even the last stragglers have followed the scent of stewed tomatoes home. At the heart of this square are the worn columns of a Roman temple. From the way the Saturnine children run around them playing hide and seek, it is hard to believe that these relics are more than 2000 years old. But Saturnia is so tied to its ancient past that if it were to be stripped of its antiquities and placed in a museum, it would be like stripping it of its soul. So instead, tourists have the rare opportunity to touch the carefully carved faces of the Roman dead on the burial stones and run their fingers over the epigraphs in the Piazza Vittorio Veneto.<br \/>Following Via degli Aldobrandeschi out of the square, you will find a stoic-looking stone column that is losing its battle against some very insistent vines. This is the only Etruscan ruin on the left side of Saturnia, built sometime after the 7th century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section We were very fascinated by the remains of the ancient Roman columns, visible in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, and the layout of the city walls (built in Roman times) with the annexed Porta Romana. We ate in one of the restaurants in the center and were more than satisfied, definitely an experience to be repeated!<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"jet-carousel__item\">\n\t<div class=\"jet-carousel__item-inner\"><div class=\"jet-carousel__content\"><h5 class=\"jet-carousel__item-title\">Saturnia...<\/h5><div class=\"jet-carousel__item-text\"><p>The village of Saturnia is truly very interesting, it is said to be one of the oldest in Italy and the evidence of its past is still tangible today, from the ancient columns to the city walls, of Roman origin. We visited the church and the Archaeological Museum and treated ourselves to a romantic aperitif at sunset in the central square....<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"jet-carousel__item\">\n\t<div class=\"jet-carousel__item-inner\"><div class=\"jet-carousel__content\"><h5 class=\"jet-carousel__item-title\">Magical!<\/h5><div class=\"jet-carousel__item-text\"><p>Saturnia is one of those villages that remain in your heart, the locals are welcoming and always smiling and the village for its part has a charm of the past, small and well-kept in every detail, it offers you the experience of a walk through history!
