naturalistic wonder in the heart of Maremma

Travelers have been attracted to Saturnia’s thermal springs since Roman imperial times, and they remain one of the most popular destinations in the Maremma.

The Guardian, The Times and Lonely Planet all list Saturnia as one of the best thermal springs in the world. At the Cascate del Mulino (SP 10), the water has carved the travertine rock into luxurious pools where you can enjoy the naturally warm water every day at any time. Already at first sight the waterfalls are a marvel, a beautiful cascade of hot thermal water pours into the underlying tanks dug naturally, in an incredible combination of colors ranging from the blue of the water to the white of the travertine to the green of the surrounding nature. All around the cultivated countryside of the Tuscan Maremma and to protect the waterfalls, perched on a hill, the ancient village of Saturnia. Here well-being and relaxation are the watchwords for a one-of-a-kind experience, pampered by the “miraculous” waters of Saturnia, known throughout the world for their incredible beneficial and healing properties.

Properties of Water

The water of Terme di Saturnia flows from a natural crater of volcanic origin. After a long journey that starts from the summit of Monte Amiata and continues deep into the ground, filtering drop by drop for 40 years, the water flows naturally in Saturnia, with a flow rate of 500 l/s. During its underground journey, the thermal water is enriched with precious elements and minerals, which give it important and unique properties. The water of Saturnia is classified as sulphurous-carbonic-sulphated-bicarbonate-alkaline-earthy, and has a constant temperature of 37.5°C.

Due to its particular composition, Saturnia thermal water has numerous benefits:

cures skin diseases

reduces blood pressure

performs a natural peeling, exfoliating and antiseptic function on the skin

increases lung capacity

improves the functioning of the respiratory and cardio-circulatory systems

determines an important anti-aging action on the liver

In particular, the waters of Saturnia are indicated in the treatment of many pathologies, such as:

pharyngitis, tonsillitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, rhinogenic deafness

acne, eczema, dermatitis, dermatosis, psoriasis, mycosis

bronchitis, rhino-sinus-bronchial syndromes

constipation, dyspepsia, dyslipidemia and minor hepatic insufficiency

arthrosis, rheumatism, myalgia, neuritis, paramorphisms

peripheral vascular disease, veno-lymphatic insufficiency

Between legend and history…

According to legend, it would have been the god Saturn, god of abundance, who gave life to the thermal crater of Saturnia after hurling a bolt of lightning to the earth to punish men who were constantly at war with each other. From the crater created by the lightning driven into the ground, hot water would begin to come out of the dense vapors, which were able to appease human souls and give rise to generations of wise and happy men, at peace with each other.

Beyond the legend, the thermal waters of Saturnia have a very ancient history, the Etruscans and Romans already knew their properties and had built the first thermal baths, near the current parish church.

Useful information for the visit

The Cascate del Mulino are free spas, which means that admission is always free. They are also always open, day and night, and can therefore be used at any time and on any day of the year. Near the waterfalls there is a large dirt parking lot, also free. Since these are free spas, there is no type of service, therefore there are no lockers, changing rooms or anything else, but there is a small refreshment point – privately managed – which offers the possibility of buying meals and drinks, showers and services for a fee. The waterfall area is quite quiet but is not monitored, so it is advisable not to leave personal items unattended. The natural pools have a seabed which, in some places, can be slippery, so wear rock shoes when bathing. The thermal waters are also particularly rich in sulfur which can damage metals, so we advise you not to wear jewelery while diving.

NOT TO BE MISSED: NIGHT SWIMMING AT THE WATERFALLS

Swimming at night at the Cascate del Mulino is undoubtedly the most beautiful experience to have in Saturnia… the tranquility of the night hours, the magic of the night, the moon and the stars gently illuminating the natural pools and the only noise of the continuous flow water, you will feel as if you have been transported to another dimension! All you have to do is choose the tub in which to immerse yourself and let yourself be lulled by the water that constantly falls from the waterfall to the river below, enjoying every moment of relaxation and well-being given by these waters rich in beneficial and healing properties. Just a little advice: bring a torch with you!

What to visit in the surrounding area

The Cascate del Mulino rise at the foot of the village of Saturnia, which gives its name to the entire spa town, the village is a real gem to discover.
